Less than half of children in Ghana attend secondary education.

SOS Nursery School Tema Ghana

In Ghana, there are currently seven SOS Schools and four SOS Nurseries.  These facilities provide education to children from SOS Villages and from the wider community. Staff members are well trained and the resources available to students are of a high standard.  Below you can find an overview on a selection of the SOS Children education projects.

Emmanuel's Story

Emmanuel lived in the SOS Children’s Village at Tema. Through the SOS schools he received a good early education and went on to study business accounting and IT at senior high school. Now he is a trained Microsoft Certified Engineer and works to provide IT solutions.

Asiakwa : SOS Schools

The SOS Nursery at Asiakwa has around 100 children, with approximately half coming from our SOS village.

  • The children learn the French language at nursery and by the time they go to Primary school, they should have a vocabulary of around 100 French words.
  • The young children have the opportunity to learn some ICT, because the nursery now has a computer.

The SOS Primary and Junior School at Asiakwa has around 300 students, around 50 coming from the SOS village.

  • Academic results at the school are high, with pupils often coming 1st to 5th in the B.E.C.E District league. The school runs various academic competition through the year, such as spelling and quiz competitions.
  • Pupils at the school take part in a number of sports, such as cross country running and regular friendly games are organised with teams from other schools in the area.

SOS School Tema GhanaTema : SOS Schools

The SOS Nursery at Tema has approximately 200 children, most coming from the local community and around 30 from our SOS village.

  • A wide range of learning activities take place at the nursery and the teachers are well-qualified in Early Childhood Education.
  • Sports days are held at the school, when children take part in dressing-up games and in races such as the ‘Lime and Spoon’ and Sack race. All of the competitors are given a little gift, such as rulers and erasers.

The SOS Primary and Junior School at Tema has over 600 students, less than 100 of whom are from the SOS village.

  • B.E.C.E results are good and pupils are also encouraged to take part in academic competitions such as Spelling Bees. One year, a student travelled with one of the teachers to take part in the International Spelling Bee in Washington DC, USA.
  • Pupils are encouraged to take part in extracurricular and sporting activities. A set of musical instruments was donated to the school from Norway and this allowed pupils to learn new music skills.
