SOS Schools in Angola

Less than 20% of children in Angola have access to secondary education

SOS Nursery School Lubango Angola

In Angola, there are currently two SOS Schools and two SOS Nurseries.  These facilities provide education to children from SOS Villages and from the wider community. Staff members are well trained and the resources available to students are of a high standard.  Below you can find an overview on the SOS Children education projects in Angola.

Clementina's Story

14-year old Clementina lives in SOS Children’s Village Benguela. She is proud to be a church scout and enjoys school. Clementina wants to be a teacher of Portuguese or a doctor one day.

Lubango : SOS Schools

The SOS Nursery at Lubango has over 150 children, around 130 from the local community and 20 from our SOS village:

  • A wide range of learning activities linked to different themes takes place here and the children have an enclosed garden for outdoor activities.
  • The highlight of the year is usually the “graduation day” when the older children dress in their best clothes to celebrate completing the nursery programme.

The SOS Primary School at Lubango has over 800 students, around 100 coming from the SOS village.

  • Primary education of six years (from grade 1 – 6) is offered to pupils at the school. And to maximise the number of children who can receive secondary education, there are two cycles of students spending three years each on the secondary course (grade 7 -9).
  • As well as providing academic schooling, some students receive practical/vocational training in computing, home economics, sewing and welding.

Benguela : SOS Schools

The SOS Nursery at Benguela has around 120 children, most coming from the local community and around 10 from our SOS village:

  • A wide range of learning activities take place in the four playrooms and though the primary focus is on the preschool years, a set of standards have also been implemented to assess school readiness.
  • The highlight of the year is usually a big picnic and barbeque, with lots of games and activities for both adults and children.

The SOS Primary School at Benguela has nearly 670 students, over 100 of whom are from the SOS village.

  • Primary education of six years (from grade 1 – 6) is offered to pupils at the school. In addition, secondary education takes place in two three-year cycles of students taking the secondary course (grade 7 -9).
  • As well as academic schooling, extracurricular courses are available in computing, home economics and agriculture. This last subject is taught in conjunction with the SOS Family Strengthening Programme, which provides the land and facilities for the food gardens run by local families.
