SOS Schools in Cameroon — SOS Schools

SOS Schools in Cameroon

Less than a third of children in Cameroon have a secondary education.

SOS Primary School Mbalmayo Cameroon

In Cameroon, there are currently two SOS Schools and two SOS Nurseries.  These facilities provide education to children from SOS Villages and from the wider community. Staff members are well trained and the resources available to students are of a high standard.  Below you can find an overview on the SOS Children education projects.

Julien's Story

Julien is nine years old and goes to the SOS Children’s school in Mbalmayo. He was so happy to be going to school that he packed his stationary four days before classes began. His teacher’s name is Mr Ndiffo.

Mbalmayo : SOS Schools

The SOS Nursery at Mbalmayo has around 150 children, most coming from the local community and less than 10 from the SOS village.

  • Learning activities for the children include a school newspaper, a small school committee to talk about subjects like bullying and a shop corner where the three-year old children ‘buy and sell’ with each other.
  • The school made a recent visit to the capital Yaoundé.

The SOS Primary School at Mbalmayo has over 400 students, around 55 coming from the SOS village.

  • Educational achievements are high, with over 90% of students passing their exams across the years. Space has also been made in the schedules for teaching children with learning difficulties. Children also take part as members of the school government committee.
  • As well as providing academic schooling, students are encouraged to take part in sports and cultural activities. Recently, three of our pupils won gold medals in national games events and at the end-of-year school celebration, an exhibition of objects made by the children was organised.

Douala : SOS Schools

The SOS Nursery at Douala has over 80 children, with around 25 coming from our SOS village.

  • A wide range of social and educational activities are held at the school and the children learn the French language. Each classroom has its own library and there is a play area and toys for the children.
  • The highlight of the year is usually the Christmas celebration when children enjoy seeing the Christmas tree and receiving gifts.

The SOS Primary School at Douala has around 180 students, with nearly 50 coming from the SOS village.

  • A high standard of education is offered to pupils at the school and most children pass their national exams. Awards ceremonies are held to encourage the students and children with learning difficulties are provided with support classes. Recently the school was the beneficiary of a new canteen and some IT/Communications equipment.
  • Children are taken on schools outings and also celebrate special days, such as the World Peace Games.
