Morrison Hotel segna il ritorno dei Doors verso atmosfere più hard rock e blues. L'album nonostante non abbia avuto singoli di particolare successo, ebbe un buon impatto su quasi tutta la schiera di fan. Infatti sul disco viene data molta più importanza alla musica ed agli arrangiamenti, piuttosto che ai testi, cosa che ai fan della prima ora non andò giù, essendo questo una sorta di "tradimento" da parte del gruppo che loro avevano incarnato come pilastro della musica ribelle.

Gli effetti di questa cura negli arrangiamenti si sentono soprattutto sul pezzo Roadhouse Blues, mentre il misticismo è la base di pezzi come Waiting for the Sun, Queen of the Highway, e Indian Summer. Ship of Fools e Land Ho! trovano il perfetto bilanciamento tra gli arrangiamenti più rock e la veste narrativa dei testi. Peace Frog è la canzone più politica e controversa dell'album e documenta l'agitazione statunitense della fine degli anni Sessanta. Blue Sunday è una ballata riposante, mentre The Spy è un lento blues che indica già la direzione che avrà il successivo album L.A. Woman.

La canzone Indian Summer è stata in realtà registrata nelle sessioni ai Sunset Sound Recorders del 1966. Scartata dall'album The Doors, è stata pubblicata in Morrison Hotel per mancanza di materiale. In questo pezzo Ray Manzarek suona il basso a tastiera insieme al vox.
