Philip George Zimbardo, né le 23 mars 1933 à New York, est un psychologue américain connu pour avoir mené l'expérience de Stanford qui mena à des théories toujours controversées aujourd'hui sur l'importance de la position sociale en psychologie individuelle.

Biographie

Zimbardo fut professeur à Stanford de 1968 jusqu'à sa retraite en novembre 2003.

Il a conçu et conduit l'expérience de Stanford dans laquelle des étudiants étaient mis dans la peau de prisonniers et de gardiens. D'après les conclusions qu'il en a tirées, les mêmes forces peuvent selon les circonstances faire de tout un chacun soit un tortionnaire, soit un héros.

Il a fondé The Shyness Clinic à Menlo Park, en Californie, qui traite la timidité des adultes et des enfants.

Il a été président de la Société américaine de psychologie en 2002.

Zimbardo est aussi réputé pour ses écrits, utilisés dans beaucoup de cours de psychologie aux États-Unis.
