I Berzerker sono una band metal di Melbourne, città del sud-est dell'Australia. La band musicale, fortemente influenzata da altre band death metal e (soprattutto) da band grindcore, può essre definita come una fusione di death metal, industrial, e speedcore con alcuni elementi Gabber techno. Il membro leader della band Luke Kenny descrive lo stile della band come industrial death metal. Sono famosi soprattutto per la velocità estrema delle loro canzoni, tanto che il primo album non aveva un batterista umano ma una drum machine, una Roland TR-909 distorta.
I Berzerker finora hanno rilasciato quattro album The Berzerker (2000), Dissimulate (2002), World of Lies (2005) e Animosity (2007), tutti registrati dalla Earache Records. Nei primi periodi della loro carriera, e anche nelle apparizioni sul palco, i membri della band furono identificati solo come The Vocalist, The Guitarist, The Bassist e The Drummer, e si identificavano solo grazie a delle maschere terrificanti. Ora i membri del gruppo non utilizzano più questa messinscena.
Il documentario in DVD The Principles and Practices of The Berzerker (2004), include diverse ore di riprese del concerto e del backstage, e mostra per la prima volta il volte dei componenti della band senza le maschere.
La maggior parte dei video della band è stata bandita dai palinsesti delle TV musicali, per ragioni come il probabile rischio di epilessia a causa delle immagini velocissime e dei flash repentini del video della canzone "Forever", oppure per le immagini terrificanti del video di "Reality". In aggiunta a questo, i video contengono sempre immagini di cadaveri o corpi mutilati.

[modifica] Gli esordi e il primo album (1995-2000)
I Berzerker inizialmente hanno catturato l'attenzione del pubblico del mondo metal attraverso l'azzeccato remissaggio delle canzoni delle death metal band Deicide e Morbid Angel. La Earache Records ha proposto il contratto, che allora consisteva solamente in un contratto individuale di Luke Kenny come DJ. Kenny era stato in passato un batterista in varie band di Melbourne, inclusa una band death metal chiamata Mystic Insight, ma dopo un serio incidente automobilistico è stato costretto a smettere di suonare.
Il sito della Earache Records dichiarava che l'album avrebbe dovuto essere registrato al Devin Townsend's Vancouver studio con il contributo di artisti affermati nel panorama del death metal come David Vincent (Morbid Angel), Kevin Sharp (Brutal Truth, Damaged), Dan Lilker (Brutal Truth, Nuclear Assault) e Jed Simon (Strapping Young Lad, Zimmer's Hole).
Dopo alcune controversie e problemi di denaro, Kenny è ritornato in Australia e ha iniziato a lavorare al progetto insieme al suo amico Sam Bean, che ha registrato le parti di chitarra e i vocals aggiuntivi. Un altro Sam ha registrato ulteriori vocals, ma nei credits dell'album figura come Toby (per via dell'anzianità). Sono stati ingaggiati anche due chitarristi di una band metal locale, i The Wolves, Jason e Ed Lacey, e dopo una lunghissima e problematica preproduzione e successiva registrazione, il primo album ufficiale della band, The Berzerker, è stato finalmente ultimato.
L'album ricevette molta approvazione dalle riviste metal underground, e la band era stata paragonata tra gli altri gruppi anche ai Napalm Death e agli Strapping Young Lad, . [1] Le maschere grottesche e le potenti performance live hanno fatto una buona pubblicità al gruppo. Sono stati successivamente girati i video di "Reality" e "Forever" ma non hanno goduto di una vasta messa in onda per via dei temi trattati e delle immagini forti.
[modifica] New members, the second album and intense touring (2001-2003)
The Berzerker had their first full U.S. tour after performing fewer than half a dozen shows, touring with other underground bands Dying Fetus, Gorguts and Skinless. Although the shows were well received, the band didn't function through the rigors of touring as a unit and at the end of the tour the session musicians, drawn from Melbourne band Alarum, departed. For some months it seemed doubtful that The Berzerker would last for long. There had been constant setbacks at every stage and any momentum gained was now lost with the departure of the live act. However, the arrival of two replacement members injected new life into the band – drummer Gary Thomas from Perth band Plague and guitarist Matt Wilcock from Melbourne death metal band Abramelin, now currently in Akercocke.
With the arrival of these new members The Berzerker set about recording their follow up album Dissimulate. The song 'No-one Wins' was also released as a video. It was claimed that Thomas' drumming on this song was considered for submission to the Guinness Book of Records as fastest drumming performance and while the band has since dismissed this as a fan-fuelled rumour, it was included in official press releases at the time [2]. Around this time the band's dragon logo was redone by designer Ivan Kenny-Sumiga. The band celebrated by playing live shows which resulted in onstage violence in Melbourne for months [citazione necessaria] before heading off for a world tour lasting from 2002 to 2003.
After covering Australia, The Berzerker toured the US with Immolation, Vader and Origin, then travelled to the UK for a headlining tour with Labrat, Insision and Red Harvest. This culminated in an infamous Earache Christmas Party appearance, where the band terrorised both record label and the audience. This exceptionally violent and drunken performance was captured on the DVD Principles and Practices of The Berzerker. The band continued on to the US after a brief Christmas break to do another full US tour with Nile, Napalm Death, Strapping Young Lad and Dark Tranquillity. Disaster struck in New York however when Thomas had an altercation with a bouncer that resulted in a broken foot and cracked vertebrae. The band could not pull out of the tour as there was still a week left, and each show had to be played to allow them to afford to make plane flights to the next tour. To solve the problem, Kenny took on playing the drums as well as vocals. Nile drummer Tony Laureano played the Carcass cover "Corporal Jigsore Quandary" each night.
At the end of that tour, the band spent ten days in Florida before their headline tour of the UK and Europe began. With no drummer, auditions were organised and the band selected a local drummer to take on tour. The new drummer was required to learn the full headlining tour set in six days[citazione necessaria]. The Berzerker hit the UK for its next round of headlining shows featuring snuff footage, locals being abducted, and audiences getting punched in the face, then headed out to Europe for their first-ever appearance there. Finally after five months of touring the band headed home.

Luke Kenny decise di utilizzare tutto il materiale girato durante i concerti e produsse il DVD intitolato The Principles and Practices of The Berzerker. La durata complessiva del DVD è di oltre 4 ore, e consiste in una ripresa montata in modo professionale dello show, un'altra basata su materiale da bootleg, riprese del backstage, rehearsal del gruppo e riprese dei viaggi durante il tour. Sono presenti anche le riprese del making-of dei due album (con inclusi i vari incidenti di percorso), interviste ai membri della band, un video sulla creazione delle maschere e delle cover degli album e i contributi dei fan, fra cui uno di essi che si è fatto tatuare il drago (logo della band) sulla schiena. Il DVD è stato indicato da Kerrang! come fondamentale per chiunque voglia fondare una band metal{fact}.
Il DVD ha portato con sé un grande cambiamento per la band: per la prima volta sono stati resi pubblici i volti dei membri della band. Da qui in poi, è stata presa la decisione di abbandonare le maschere.
[modifica] World of Lies. No more masks. (2005-2006)
With Thomas healing in Perth and Wilcock moving to the UK to join Akercocke, The Berzerker decided to record the third album World of Lies over Christmas 2004 with the original lineup from the debut album. It was recorded spontaneously over a week, with no prior planning in direct opposition to how they had created albums in the past. In other changes, all guitar tracks were recorded directly into a laptop via an analog to digital converter without a guitar amp and no live drumming featured on the album. Subsequent live performances featured Dave Gray of Akercocke taking over drumming duties.
