Leslie Poles Hartley nacque il 30 dicembre 1895 a Whittlesey, nel Cambridgeshire.
Fu un famoso scrittore inglese, molto conosciuto per il suo romanzo L'età incerta, dal quale fu tratto nel 1971 il celebre film Messaggero d'amore.
È morto il 13 dicembre 1972 a Londra.
