Hypomagnesemia means low levels of magnesium in the blood.

Causes    Return to top

Several conditions can cause hypomagnesemia, including:

• Alcoholism
• Chronic diarrhea
• Malabsorption

The condition also can be caused by the use of drugs that increase urine output (diuretics).
