Equatorial Guinea – SOS Medical and Social Centres

In Equatorial Guinea there is currently one Social Centre and one Medical Centre for children and the local community, both in Bata.  Many SOS Social Centres operate via Family Strengthening Programmes, which aim to support the wider community.  Medical Centres provide treatment and services to the local community.  Below is some information about some of the Social Centres that SOS Children runs in Equatorial Guinea:

Description of SOS Medical Centre:

In 2001, an SOS Medical Centre was built so as to ensure efficient medical care for the people and to implement various preventive measures at a local level. The centre has a treatment room with beds, a consultation room, a laboratory, a dispensary and an operating theatre and delivery room. It also has a reception and administration area. Since it opened, up to 2,050 patients have been attended to each month.

Work and Achievements:

The average annual care services in the centre is 7,508 cases, among them, 70% were infants, without counting the cases provided by the cooperation program medical Spanish.

The more frequently recorded pathologies in the consultations are again: Malaria, Cholera (sharp respiratory infections); EDA (diarrheic sharp illnesses); Syphilis; Gonorrhea; Hepatitis; AIDS; Typhoid fever and the degenerative illnesses as the osteoarthritis, the arthritis, the neuritis and the arterial hypertension.

The vaccination program continues working, in which all the children from 0 to 5 years were vaccinated against illnesses like tuberculosis, measles, tetanus, the ferocious cough and diphtheria. We also vaccinate pregnant women against the tetanus. We also vaccinate women enclosed against tetanus. we vaccinated a monthly average of 170 children and 70 pregnant women, lower quantities than those assured in 2007, but superior to those of 2008.

They have been organized educational talks in the schools and trainings for the personnel of the family service (SOS mothers and aunts) on: feeding and nutrition, dental health, IST (illnesses of sexual transmission), and other topics of interest for all.

SOS Social Centre in Bata: In-Depth

Work and Achievements: 

The Family Strengthening Program is relatively new in SOS Children’s Villages of Equatorial Guinea. It started three years ago from the recommendations of the Regional Office.

At the end of 2009, the program covers 186 beneficiaries, of which 145 are children and 41 adults. Thanks to the FSP, 98 disadvantaged boys and girls had access to education in normal conditions in 2008/2009. Resources provided inculded: the uniform and all the necessary school materials.
