SOS Children's Village Choluteca

Choluteca is situated at a distance of 136 km from Tegucigalpa, near the Nicaraguan border. The decision to construct an SOS Children's Village near this town was based on the following two facts: the growing number of orphans and neglected children in the region and the necessity to continue the SOS Emergency Relief Programme "Mitch". Construction finished in October 2000, in November the first children moved into their new homes. The official opening took place in March 2001.

The SOS Children's Village consists of a number of family houses, an administrative building, the house of the village director, staff accommodation, a room for medical treatment and a pavilion.

Other SOS Projects in Choluteca

The SOS Social Centre Choluteca is another facility on the site of SOS Children's Village Choluteca which developed out of the emergency relief programme. It includes a day-care centre where up to 150 babies and children can be looked after while their parents are at work. In addition, it has been running a childminding programme with mothers and families of the local community since 2005. Both programmes help to strengthen families and thereby prevent child abandonment.

Background to Choluteca

Choluteca is a municipality and the capital city of the Honduran department of the same name and with a population of 100,000 makes it one of the largest cities in the country. It is based in southern Honduras between El Salvador and Nicaragua and is generally considered the regional centre of southern Honduras as well as being a major transit point on the Pan-American Highway.
