British and French front line shown in red, German front line shown in blue. German second and third lines shown as dashed blue lines. British and French objectives on the first day are shown as a dashed red line.

British divisions are colour-coded: green for regular divisions, yellow for Territorial Force divisions and red for New Army divisions though in most cases the regular and New Army divisions contain a mixture of battalions.
