See SWNS story SWAERIAL; These stunning aerial shots over London are some of the oldest surviving birdseye pictures taken of our capital - back in 1909. The glass slides, which show Buckingham Palace, Westminster, South Kensington and even Chelsea Football Ground Stamford Bridge, were taken by scientist Sir Norman Lockyer. The incredible images which pre-date the first aerial survey of London by eight years were captured on a large format camera from a balloon. The collection of 70 glass slides and negatives are going under the hammer next week and are expected to fetch up to £500. As well as discovering the gas helium Lockyer is also remembered for being the founder and first editor of the influential journal Nature.
