Every time I load this page I get a "spinning beachball of death" that occupies most of CPU activity for more than twenty seconds when I 
load the page for the first time in a day. I'm using Safari on mac OS X 10.4.3.

I validated the page code, and besides there being tons of un-htmlspecialcharacters-ized quotes, could find nothing wrong. It may be in 
the page CSS - I watched things load (safari has a neat "activity" window) and it seems to hang there.

I don't encounter any such problem at that URL here...

Mac OS X 10.4.4
Safari 2.0.3 (417.8)
Dual-core 2GHz G5

I believe 10.4.4 includes some Safari fixes, so try hitting Software 
Update and see if that clears it up.

I'm sorry to report that the problem persists. It's only the first time I load up Wiki - yet I have my cache settings at "never cache". 
Sometimes the page body appears and the "spinning" continues until the left column appears.

I also notice that if I open a page with little left-column content the pause is shorter. The Paris page I initially spoke has versions 
through around sixty languages... just a thought.

Is this an older computer with limited RAM? It's possible that it's 
just loading the big East Asian fonts slowly.

iMac G4 (flat panel) with 256mo ram... but you may have a point on the languages - I have disactivated many and OS X may be 
"looking" for them.

Anyhow this problem doesn't seem to be shared by many.
